An experience exists within surfing that has become increasingly difficult to find. It is marked by the freedom of leaving ordinary life, the uncertainty of entering an unfamiliar place, and the need to respond to conditions that cannot be controlled.
Before modern forecasting and documentation transformed surfing, surfers encountered coastlines with far less information available. That absence of information created uncertainty, and that uncertainty was an essential part of discovery.
Over the same period, the relationship between surfers and surf brands weakened. Companies founded within surfing expanded, changed ownership, and became increasingly removed from the people they once represented.
